A Pallet Backsplash

Pallets!!! A couple years ago it seemed like pallets were everywhere, it was the big thing. People were using them for everything. It was a band wagon I wanted to be on. So to my husbands irritation I started collecting pallets. I had lots and lots of project ideas that well, never happened. after collecting quite a pile my backsplash was born.

Ok lets back up here just a bit. When we moved in the backsplash that was in the kitchen was dreadful. I knew I wanted it changed but was unsure of what I wanted to put in its place. One day right after we moved in my brother in law came over, I guess he disliked the backsplash as much as I did because they took it down that night.

Notice how you can see the studs in the walls now? The whole wall had to come out. So, now that the offensive fruit was removed, I was still no closer to knowing what I wanted up in the kitchen. So it literally sat like this for years. This is not a over exaggeration. YEARS. Where the studs were exposed and on one wall the insulation was exposed.

Bring in the pallets. Let me start by saying that breaking down a pallet is not for the faint of heart. It is hard work. It is annoying work. It takes forever. My solution was to simply cut around the nails and use what I could.

Once the pieces were cut I grabbed some blue paint. I made about 5 cups of paint. Some were mixed with white paint, some with water, and some with both. Then it was just a matter of nailing the painted boards to the exposed studs.

All in all I think it turned out pretty well. This was supposed to be a temporary fix until I could get a whole new kitchen. However, that project is on indefinite hold, and I am ok with that.

I am starting to love my kitchen just the way it is! The boards are not perfect, they are not fancy. Maybe I am getting old but sometimes simple is just better.
